Pinova, Inc is notifying customers that the glycerol ester of wood rosin (GEWR) remains the best choice for a weighting agent to stabilize sports drinks and other citrus-flavored beverages. This notice comes after a recent decision was released by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), in which the Committee withdrew the tentative specifications for the glycerol ester of gum rosin (GEGR).
JECFA concluded a review of GEGR at its 80th meeting in June 2015. In the Summary and Conclusions document released July 6, 2015, JECFA noted that the requested toxicity and safety information for the GEGR was not provided. They therefore withdrew the tentative specifications for GEGR. This decision from JECFA comes on the heels of a similar decision by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2010, which rejected a petition for approval of GEGR. EFSA warned that there were not sufficient toxicological studies and other data to allow the use of GEGR as a food additive.
JECFA published specifications for the glycerol ester of wood rosin at its 37th meeting (1988) and established an ADI of 25 mg/kg body weight at its 46th meeting (1996). At the 77th JECFA meeting in 2013, the Committee reevaluated the safety and toxicity data for the GEWR and reaffirmed the specifications and ADI for the wood-rosin based product. In addition to being approved by JECFA, GEWR is also approved for use as a food additive by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, EFSA, and other major regulatory agencies around the world.
“Companies considering the glycerol ester of gum rosin [GEGR] as a substitute should be aware of the regulatory concerns, in light of these recent decisions,” says Ken Kennedy, Sr. Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Pinova Holdings, Inc. “Pinova wants to reassure our customers that the wood rosin-based product remains the most effective stabilizer whose safety has been consistently verified for use in beverages, including sports drinks and citrus sodas.”
Pinova’s product line includes Pinova Ester Gum 8BG, food-grade glycerol ester of wood rosin (GEWR). Ester Gum 8BG is an effective weighting agent for adjusting the density of citrus oils and improving stability in beverages, while at the same time providing a superior cloud.
